Stupid Things You See In The Gym

Yeah, the dumbest thing in this thread is the person talking a photo of someone else without their permission then posting it online to mock them.

The phone use in gyms can be mildly annoying, but the phone people will let you work in if you ask them politely. I’ve NEVER had a person deny me working in on their bench or cable. If they are a phone person, they usually apologize for being on their phone without me saying anything.

Thank you!!

As someone who was bullied for going to a gym as a teen, the fact that people act like no one notices or cares about others is such BS. I fear I am one of these stories or someone "discreetly" taking my pic and laughing or complaining about me to friends and acquaintances.

Everything you say I have also struggled with. With the added fact that I am morbidly obese.
There are certainly douchebags. Most people don’t care what you are doing there. A few assholes can ruin it though. I think the deeper into barbell territory you get, the less douchey it is.

Don't care who you are or what you look like. If you have no common courtesy and take over a piece or two doing things like sitting on equipment(obviously not resting between sets), sending emails or doing work I'm going to be upset. I get X amount of minutes to use the facility and I paid the same as you. If you don't understand ask questions of the management but be aware that most users will not offer unsolicited advice since it's not good etiquette.
Personally I like to see new people at the gym, and yes, even big people. I think it takes a lot of courage and is incredibly difficult to overcome all of what you stated.

I go to a local YMCA where there are a lot of older and special needs people using the facilities. I've learned to work around these issues but sometimes it is frustrating when you're on a tight schedule.

Wow! A full blown laptop at the gym! Dude was probably watching a movie.... I just thought people scrolling on their phones was bad.

Put your headphones on, forget the nonsense of the day and grind out your symphony of self improvement. If it's 3 minutes of Cardio, fine, if it's 3 hours of weights, fine. Do You... When your done, then go back to your tech life. Not make the rest of us wait while you make your door dash buffet order...

The gym is a place to be selfish and put in work ON yourself. Nobody else can do that FOR you. It's for YOUR OWN health.

Simply, if you don't USE it, you LOSE it.

Those of us who want to be in the gym, want to try and better themselves but struggle with anxiety and self doubt, self hate, self esteem issues... go to the gym and no one will say anything to your face about how much they hate you, your routine, your workout speed, your form, your appearance, your behavior, your fitness level, your body shape.

Then we see regulars complain online or even in the gym, about all types of people, especially someone whom you yourself can be perceived as... you get discouraged, but ironically also get told by those same people that they wouldn't judge others.

It comes across as disingenuous. The solution of course is to stop saying no one cares and instead work on building those with worries up. But you can't complain about people whom may just be inexperienced or whatever and simultaneously say no one cares what you do or look like, it IS noticed by those of us who are anxious.

I dont know if any of you used to be or know any morbidly obese people. But we are well aware off how much space we take up, of people being judgmental. We already feel like our presence is detrimental to others around us. It's always interesting hearing people talk bad about fat people in the gym, attributing the worse possible traits to them.

"They barely worked out and probably goes home to eat a tray of cookies and chips lmao!!"

Be honest, you know some of you've thought or said that to others. (And I've read that in this very thread.)

I want to see even more people who are obese that challenge themselves and want lifestyle changes.

Thank you for saying that. I had posted my heartfelt analysis of things said here — and I bet people who said them aren't bad people and even had good intentions. But many things here just validate some other people's fears and anxieties of going to a gym.

No, I don't expect people to change or apologize or anything, I'm just saying this has been very eye-opening and validating.

I've been trying to exercise by myself, at home (with AppleFitness+) and/or at the park (walking, can't run unfortunately). It isn't nearly as good as a gym workout for building muscle mass, but in a year or two I'll have enough confidence in my body and form to be able to go back to a gym and not quit it. Also perhaps Ozempic will become way cheaper by then (at least in my country) lol

Honestly, the hardest part of going to the gym for me...is going to the gym. I have to beat down all the reasons every day I goe as to why I shouldn't go. I feel a bit off, I'm sore, it's too cold, I want to go to the Chinese buffet, I'm too old. Once there it's easy.

I get the sentiment, but a simple conversation is an easy way to avoid being upset. Kindness and confidence. You can even make a comment like, “Mind if I work in while you’re texting?” People are often more agreeable than confrontational.

Ha ha ha! Never happens that way at my gym. They will even claim to have the right to sit there as long as they wish. Complaining to management is a waste of time.

How is someone that is unrecognizable mocked?

It sucks that they don’t move or speed up, and that management does nothing. Like I said, I’ve never had anyone not move or share when I ask.

We’re not going to get into the semantics of mockery. Taking photos of someone, even with their face concealed, is not cool. Then using that photo to make fun is douchey. We don’t know their story. Maybe they have a deadline and are multitasking. Maybe they need it to unwind. Fuck, maybe they need to take their mind someplace else in order to work out. Them being on their laptop doesn’t have any effect on anyone else’s lives, so I don’t see the need to use it to laugh at them.

Not buying it.

Nope. Not buying it.
